Jersey Shore Winter Weather and Ice Dams: SEVPRO Can Help

SERVPRO of Jackson/Lacey can help with ice damming at the Jersey Shore.

Winter 2016-2017

So far the Jersey Shore has been pretty lucky with the winter weather this season with exception to this past week (January 4, 2017 to January 11, 2017). Some of the weather experts are saying that mid-January will be mild then turn cold toward the end of the month continuing into early/mid-February.  Possible late January into early to mid-February snow.  But there is a long way from now till then so all we can really do is play it by ear and day by day.
With all the differences in the weather there seems to be a lot of people coming down with colds and or the flu. So let’s all remember to cover our mouth and noses when coughing and sneezing.  Also antibacterial lotion and soap.  Remember when you are out and about shopping and have to use a cart to wash your hands because the handles of shopping carts have ton of gems.  Some store even have antibacterial wipes next to the carts for your convenience.  We all need to stay healthy so when the snow storms come we can go out and have fun in the snow.
When the snow does come and when it does, we need to make sure that we take a lot of breaks while shoveling our driveways and cleaning off our cars so we don’t over exert ourselves causing health problems. Please check on your elderly parents or neighbors as it is harder for them to do those chores themselves.  If you have teenagers have them go over and help out.  Keep an eye on your pets in the snow too their paws can become frost bitten.
With the winter come the freezing cold, make sure that young children and the elderly are taken care of and kept warm. It is a good idea before the winter even gets started to have your heating check by a professional because if you don’t and it fails in the middle of a storm or cold freeze professionals could be too busy to get to you in a timely manner.  Always make sure you have plenty of canned goods and water on hand incase power is lost.  If you can afford it buying a generator is a good idea just make sure if you have to use it there’s plenty of ventilation so the fumes don’t cause more harm than good.
Ice dams are also a headache when it comes to the winter snow storms. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. This will cause you to have to call in a professional like SERVPRO of Jackson/Lacey to come in and fix the damage.  Most the time ice damn damage will be covered by your homeowners insurance but you should double check with your insurance company to see if would be covered.  Depending on how much damage is done it could be in the thousands to mitigate and repair.
